Things are starting to get off to a roaring start for pitchers and catchers at spring training camps all across MLB. Most of the news has already started off with athletes apologizing to the fans and their teammates regarding the Mitchell report and HGH use in general and this topic will most likely become the focal point of much of the begging of this young baseball season.
Today both Eric Gagne and Andy Pettitte took the podiums and gave their little heart felt feelings and apologies to everyone and anyone they could think of. Is this really going to be what I have to hear out of spring training camps for the next six weeks? Of course it’s the right public relations move for them to do, but its not something that I want to hear and mostly I really don’t care for.
I want things to go back and be what they were before the Mitchell report came out. I enjoy hearing Peter Gammons giving me the inside scoop on baseball tonight. I love hearing how my team is coming along during spring training and how they are going to match up against their division. After today I have come to the conclusion that for the time being baseball is going to be in a big transition period. Steroids have tarnished our past time for so long that most of us have just been used to the steroid era. Performance enhancing drugs have to be cleaned our of MLB’s closet and baseball needs to get back to a normal playing field.
Still, how long are we going to have to deal with every main headline in our local newspapers and every main headline on ESPN and our local news be about HGH. Personally Im over this conversation and ready to get back into a new season of baseball. Ready to go sit in the seats of Fenway or Wrigley and grab a beer and hear the roar of the crowd with a couple of my friends. Head over to the local baseball field and get a big game of softball together.
To all my fellow journalist, there is a lot more for us to write about in the sport of baseball than this whole steroid story. If we want to help get the fans past this tarnished era of baseball the least we can do is bring them great stories about the outlook of their teams. I can’t wait for this talk to be over and athletes to stop coming forward and making an excuse for their use and there over used pathetic apologies. The bottom line is u used steroids, you’re a cheater and no matter how many times you look America in the eye, where still going to know you’re a cheat. Stop the crap and lets get back to baseball!
