Going into Super Bowl XLII I was thinking that I was about to witness history? Witness the Patriots march into another Super Bowl and do what no other team has ever done, 19-0. We did witness history on Sunday and that was the Giants winning and being a part of the biggest upset in Super Bowl history! The New York Giants did what no other team has done all season long, beat the New England Patriots.
Sports Nation said that the New York Giants stood absolutely no chance of winning this game. Some said this game was going to be a blowout. Did anyone ever tell this to the Giants? They came out and played this game with no fear whatsoever. The confidence that they possessed almost convinced me that they where the 12 point favorites. The inconsistent Eli Manning looked like he had been to this dance before and the front four defensive linemen looked like unstoppable predators all gunning for one helpless prey!
All season long the doubters, naysayer and critics couldn’t find a single moment to stop and actually think that this team had a shot. Does any of this sound familiar to Giants fans? Tom Coughlin should be fired immediately. Eli Manning is a huge first round bust and will never be a franchise quarterback in New York. This team won’t make the playoffs and if they do, they don’t have the leadership to win a first round playoff game. The last comment before everyone changed their minds, “the Giants don’t stand a chance in the Super Bowl against Brady and the undefeated Patriots.” Wow, how things change in a New York minute. Tom Coughlin wins Super Bowl and talks of an extension are on the way. Eli Manning is Super Bowl MVP! Leadership and team unity all come together at the same time and the Giant are Super Bowl XLII Champions!
Even with all of this said I never thought the Patriots would lose. I thought the game would be close and maybe the Patriots would be tested...but lose? I could sit here and point out all the big mistakes that Patriots made which led them to lose or even all the times the Giants caught a big break or had a ball bounce their way, but everything you need to know about Super Bowl XLII happened on the miracle play. You know the play where Manning was almost sacked two or three times but managed to scramble our of the pocket and launch the ball down field and the pass just hung in their air for what seemed an eternity, and even though David Tyree and Rodney Harrison went up for the ball at the same moment Tyree managed to catch the ball off his helmet! That is the play that will define this Super Bowl forever. You know how when anyone ever brings up Super Bowl XXXIV Rams vs. Titans, everyone always remembers and brings up that last pass from McNair to Kevin Dyson that ended up just short?, well the Manning pass to Tyree will be remember in the same way. This Super Bowl will be remembered by that play and the 30 second highlight loop of Brady getting sacked by various Giants defensive linemen. Seriously what else really is there?
It’s finally good to say that the Giants where better than the Patriots on Sunday. They just wanted this game a little more than the Patriots and trust me it showed. I’m not a Giants fan but I am actually happy for Giants fans. It’s tough when you’re made to believe that your team doesn’t have a prayer in the world. That you’re going to see the town that you where brought up to hate, win another Super Bowl. To win the way the Giants did and to do it to Boston makes it that much sweeter!! Congratulations New York and enjoy this moment while you can because before you know it New York media will already be talking about how you can’t repeat!
