What has been months of Jason Kidd begging to be traded has seemed to finally paid off. The Mavericks and Nets on Wednesday have reached an agreement in principle on a Kidd deal that would send Jason Kidd and Malik Allen to Dallas in exchange for Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George and Maurice Ager. Sources also say that Dallas will send the Nets the league maximum $3 million, the Mavericks first round draft pick and a first rounder in 2010.
I could foresee Jason being dealt and for a while there I really wasn’t sure which team he would go to but after seeing Shaq head to the Suns and Pau Gasol head to the Lakers, this just seemed to be a move that Dallas had to make to keep up with the Jones’s. The West being as deep in competitive teams as it has every been, it looked like Cuban saw the writing on the wall. He knew that in order to keep his team excited about their chances in the West he had to put another piece to the puzzle. Also, the Dallas fans were looking around and seeing how much improved everyone around them was getting and may have started to grow concerned about their teams chances.
The biggest thing that I didn’t like about this trade was the amount of depth that Dallas had to give up. Losing Stackhouse and Diop may hurt them in the long run because they are so valuable off the bench for Dallas. But Dallas seems more motivated than ever in spite of these concerns. They believe that Kidd is still a prime source of leadership and mental toughness that they will need to get them over the playoff hump that they have been battling the past couple seasons.
The thing that is the most disappointing thing about this trade is the Mavericks giving up Devin Harris whom was supposed to be ready to be their point guard of the future. Harris signed a contract extension this summer and has been known as being Cuban’s favorite player, but Mark decided that he was willing to part ways if that meant getting Kidd back to Dallas.
Im just happy that this is all over and done with because I was getting so sick of hearing Jason complain every chance that he got. Dallas was willing to take Kidd on and see if he could finally help get Cuban and the Mavericks that championship ring that they have been so close to getting but just can’t make it happen. Time will only tell if this trade was worth giving up a decent core of reliable players for a point guard that may only have a couple years left in the tank. My prediction is that Dallas will fall short once again and not just because Jason Kidd wasn’t playing well with the Mavericks but because the West is so dominate that they will need every weapon possible to make it to the championship game and it looks to me that the Mavericks gave up to many weapons for one big bomb and that bomb wont be big enough to wipe out enough Western Conference opponents. Ill be watching to see what happens, will u?
