The Scum of Sampson

By: Tim Scott

Deja vu has struck at the University of Indiana where head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson has not once but twice been nailed with making illegal recruiting phone calls. A school investigation last year revealed that Sampson and his assistants made more than 100 impermissible phone calls. This occurred when Sampson was on NCAA probation for making 577 improper phone calls between 2000 and 2004 at the University of Oklahoma.

The newest report is stating that Sampson provided false and misleading information to university and NCAA investigators. Sampson of course denies that he ever provided misleading information but then again how do you trust a man who lied to his fans, players and the University of Oklahoma about his involvement in illegal recruiting calls while coach there.

When Indiana University athletic director Rick Greenspan hired Sampson he was well aware of how corrupt this man was. He continued to assure the Alumni and university officials that Sampson was a changed man and that would all be in the past. How has that turned out for you Mr. Greenspan? Two years later your standing on a podium telling reporters and Indiana University faithful that your coach is under NCAA investigation. Not only should Kelvin Sampson be fired, Rick Greenspan needs to step down because he is the main reason why Indiana is in the situation they are in. He hired Sampson now he needs to fire Sampson and step down as athletic director. That would be the fastest way for the university to move on from this ordeal and get back on the right foot.

Its truly sad that we are dealing with these kinds of investigations in a sports that is suppose to set an example to its students. Kelvin Sampson is one of the worst role models for his players that I have ever witnessed. He is a lying snake that will tell you what you want to hear to your face and once you leave the room he is plotting on how to destroy you!

Even though Sampson has nearly 2.5 million dollars left on his deal, I think money needs to not be the deciding factor in Sampson’s fate with the school. Principle and character should be the reasoning that he gets fired immediately following the Michigan State game. The University of Indiana would be far better off giving Sampson 2.5 million to go away than to stay!

Hopefully Kelvin Sampson can be an example to other coaches on why cheating in the recruiting business of college basketball is not worth the price. Im sure it wont be the last time we see a coach be accused of illegal recruiting but hopefully it will greatly decrease the chances of coaches like Sampson getting a second chance in the game.
